Adventures in Wireless-land

My adventure starts with the upcoming end to my free service from IMMI. At the time it sounded like such a boon to have free unlimited wireless and internet phone service. However I ended up with a broken phone, locked phones galore and a new wireless world. When I left Cingular had a $29 "local" plan which included California and Nevada. Well except for the (rare) exception of Utah, CA and NV is all I need. Now I find that Cingular and all the other providers have met in a dark room and raised the lowest price to $39, with the same 450 minutes that my $29 plan had. Also I did enjoy the paragraph
Cingular also imposes the following charges: a Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee of up to $1.25 to help defray its costs incurred in complying with obligations and charges imposed by State and Federal telecom regulation, a gross receipts surcharge, and State and Federal Universal Service charges. The Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee is not a tax or a government required charge.
Is not the price of service (In this case a massive $39), all the business costs including taxes plus a amount of profit? How did it become ok for a business to charge it's customers (who are already taxed by the government on their Cingular bill) for some of its own tax? Despite the beauty of the phone at the top of the page after dealing with Cingular Trying to get a non-contracted transfer (impossible), I learned it would require a 11 month contract. Or a 2 year where I could get a few hundred bucks off the Samsung pictured at the top. Well for 12 months I can get the same few hundred bucks off a LG Chocolate phone (directly above) which is just as cool good. Well I guess I will now be a Verizon customer. And I must say I fear the same fees, restrictions, and locking policies will be in place at Verizon.

Writely

It seems Google now has a new online program called writely, not surprisingly found on writely.com. The only thing that i would like is as you type spell checking. However with web apps that is not very realistic. One thing that is great is that it auto saves whenever you idle for a moment and every so often as well. This will be great. While microsoft's Office Live is moving towards online storage of files, if editing or creating online is not added it will loose the war (although momentum will carry it through many battles to come.)

If you haven't noticed I use alot of google stuff. This website is powered by blogger even. Other google stuff i use: Gmail, Google calendar, Picasa, Writely and a few more. As long as they stick to their Motto: Don't Be Evil (or even if they stay less evil) i will stick with them, at least when it comes to PCs.

Update

It has been a long time since i had the chance to post anything so i thought I would add a quick entry. I am all vacationed out as my personal vacation then family vacation then extended family vacation ran into eachother with just a coupla weeks between. And a bit of acid reflux (which i had never had, and suggest it should be avoided) made one of those weeks nearly unbearable. However it has been fun, Long beach/Disneyland, then San Diego, and finally Washington, CA. The picture is not of my vacation. those can be found at flickr.com. This is Yoshi's Island 2 which had me excited even before i saw the WiFi logo on the case. Now i will be picking it up in november for sure. I better start saving as Wii will be getting alot of nintendo stuff the 4th quarter of this year :)

Whyyy?? - Part 2

I’m not in existential crisis! Just the opposite. I was fine when existence had no meaning. Meaningless in a universe that has no meaning—that I get. But meaninglessness in a universe that has meaning . . . [to Jaye] what does it mean?! - Wonderfalls
Why are we here: I know that we are here to be happy. Weather you are religious "Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." or not "Different men seek after happiness in different ways and by different means, and so make for themselves different modes of life and forms of government". Why do I have a website: I like to keep a journal and it was a good way to start out with my shallow thoughts. As I continue I want to grow deeper on the outside, an open book to the world. Also I enjoy creating websites. Who Do I like: Family (too many to name) Best friends Rocky, My brother Keith, my cousin Cynthia, Potential best friends, Marc. Famous people Lucy Lu, Joanne Cusak, and Johnny Depp. When do I Laugh: At a good joke, Comedy Central Shows, Youtube, with a Friend, all the time When do I Cry: Rarely, Great movies, when i feel like it. When will I be happy: I am happy in so many ways, but I have some goals based on health, friendship, relationships in general and school that I hope will improve what i find lacking in my life right now.

Back from vacation.

Well another vacation dead and gone. Now I need to focus on school. Deadlines, schedules, requirements, costs almost make the ability to enroll in school more impressive than the degree you receive. I missed the one day i had to register. Got home all tired and Mom wanted to go take Aaris to see Cars. After KFC and the movie I had totally forgot to register for my classes. Now I must wait until august to fight tooth and nail, most likely ending up trying to add the class. And that will do no good if I don't do some learnin' of my own before class starts. I barely got by in the first .NET programing class and this second one builds on what has already excaped my brain. Last semester i got an F because the first assignment wasn't due until a week after drops ended. And i held out hope until the day before. Anyway my trip to Long Beach was nice. Went with Rocky to Disneyland and to a Cuban Restaurant. I also turned my ticket into a year pass, going again in October. But I will be going with Sheri, but maybe I will be able to go out to dinner with Rocky anyway.. or all of us, who knows. When I got back and steped out into the 90 degree Sacramento breeze, I was tempted to turn around and catch another plane back (not really). Its still hot and I can't wait for it to end. I've been letting my forgetfullness throw my money down the drain. I waited too long to cancel the first hotel I booked and had to pay for it and the one I stayed in. I also let my Audible account start another month without getting a book in july.. 22 bucks down the drain, probably my cheepest mistake this month.

Dread Pirate DVD

Well both of my comic books came to day, along with two dvds. One being... get ready for it... Dum dum da dum.. The Princess Bride - Dread Pirate Edition!!! Well you probably guessed with the picture. I hope you have watched this movie. It is the best/cleverest/funniest movie I have seen as of yet. When googling about it, I found this game: It turns out not to be related, but it seems like a good game. But at 50 bucks at target and buy.com its quite too much for a board game. If you havent seen "The Princess Bride" yet then you need to pick it up the next time your at your local video store. Because this has been a small update here are some video links i found the last few days.

Whaaat? - Part 1

IMAGE_613.jpg
I keep six honest serving-men (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When And How and Where and Who. - Rudyard Kipling
What makes me happy: Theme Parks, Swimming in the pool/river/ocean, Family, Friends My Friend, movies, a non-rerun of Stargate (my new startrek) What makes me sad: My great ability to sabotage myself in so many ways. What makes me tired: I don't know, but I have always been tired more often than I think is normal. What makes me awake: swimming, dancing (no, i don't know how but i shake my booty anyway.), good music, creating web or video stuff. Shopping (too much). Nature (when i get out in it).
* * *
How I can tell what today is: Check the date of when Rocky was last on My Space. How i know what time it is: Because i can't live without my new Doctor Who wallpaper on my phone, I must go into setup and 'Date/Time' settings. How I know what's going on in the world: digg.com, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, & The Soup.
* * *
Where I live: At home, with my mom, sister, brother, cousin, other cousin & uncle. And my other brother is home for the summer. Where I will live after graduation: I hope to take over the Howton/Holdaway homestead eventually as did my parents. However my life is in need of the adventure and experience of moving out, making new connections and a new environment to explore. Sacramento, Newport/Huntington/Long Beach area, San Diego area, are all possibilities. Where I play: Disneyland has always been my choice playground. Although now when I vacation I spend more time doing other things. Beach bumming is always a good distraction from the daily grind. Where I toil away: Sacramento State has become more of a stressful place of work than a enjoyable place to learn. I'm now motivated to finnish up in a year. This means summer school next year. Let us just see if I will still be willing to give up summer after two semesters. Work at PC Focus has also become a bit tedious as my love of building computers and working on the computer has become second to repair as the 'computer shop' industry is drying up and on-site repair is the apparent future. How to drum up business in a new field is the daunting task I don't know how to accomplish. Where I spend too much time: In bed with my laptop, tv remote or pillow.. I need to get a treadmill and chair and only use my bed to sleep. Anyone have a cheep used treadmill that can hold a 150 killos or so? (makes me sound fit at 150 :)

Doctor Who!!!

I saw the latest episode last night.. Can't wait 'till next week What? You haven't yet watched "Series 2"? Well how to explain... Think of the most awesome show you have ever seen. In comparison with Doctor Who, that show sucks.
* UPDATE: Saw the finale and have to say that the plot twist that blew me away in part one was nothing to part two. Lets just say you don't know if the doctor & rose will be together next season. Only 2006-12-25 00:00:00 GMT+00:00 until the Christmas Invasion

Super Mario Powers

Well, it seems that SI Kids leaked the release date of the wii. That means only 4 months to go :P. I was thinking as i read about it, what Mario powers would i like. There are many to choose from. There is....
FLIGHT
TRANSMOGRIFICATION
PYROKINESIS
(And so many more...)
Heck.. If I could do a back flip onto a high ledge that would be awesome. Here is to hoping that Super Mario Galaxies has all and more of the powers that make Mario Super. He started with just a high jump, now he is the most well known videogame figure world wide. P.S. the launch titles I am going to break the bank with may include some or all of the following: Dragon Quest Swords, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Rayman Raving Rabbits, Red Steel (and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles if it is out). P.P.S. Too much nintendo lately.. I will stop for a bit.. :P

Photos

www.flickr.com
Well i did it, wasted my hard (not yet) earned $$ on a flicker pro account. No I'm not going to become a professional photographer but with the loss of my hard drive.. and the freaking pain of opening 8 gigs of photos on my laptop has convinced me to move it offline.. I hope no-one in my family is "on the lam" as I don't plan on putting any restrictions on the photos.. I have always had an ubuntu outlook on digital media.. (excluding personal correspondence..)

Emily's plan...

Well as often is the case I have been letting the little things that don't seem to matter slip from my daily routine. And let other habits grow. One that has not been a factor in my life is diet and exercise. I know enough about nutrition that I could eat well enough. In actuality I have a good diet (other than fast food) but too large an appetite. Unfortunately, for the past 3 years I have let fast food play a larger, and larger role. Not good. Emily has started me today on a diet which is making me sick *gag*. Too girly-ish food for my taste. lol. But unlike attempts in the past I am motivated to continue on, I will just have to plan out a better menu with 'Chez Emily'. As nutritionists and health experts everywhere will tell you, calories in should equal calories out. Or at least that is what the ones without a fad diet to sell say. So with the new dedication to no fast food and actual human sized portions of home cooked meals, I am swimming every night. And a maybe find a good treadmill before fall. I do enjoy cooking and going out to eat, but I will try to stick to the occasional sit down dinner when dining out. On my first day I was stuck on a service call downtown around noon, hungry, with a 'Long John's Silver' starring me in the face. I thought it was commendable that I passed on by that rare treat of battered fish and chicken. Well it will be an experience, and Emily has sworn to cut me down to size.. Maybe by next summer I can fit into the fancy 2XL or even XL TNBC shirts.

My new favorite sudoku site

A very nicely done site www.sudokucombat.com is a great place to play sudoku. I got 11min and 15sec. How about you?

Busy summertime.

There is so much to do and so much going on this summer. School will be here before I know it! We were going over "Dates" last night as a family and one activity seems to run into another. I hope i can get through it. It is also freaking hot this summer. It is every summer in sacramento but i forget every year. I think it will be fun anyway to go as a family to San Diego, it always is. I think i mentioned before that if I move from home it will be to Long Beach or San Diego. (I also changed my profile pic. It is a much better version of me.. Jeff 2.0 )

Stuff

Daily Show Funny... Adobe Flash Funny... Nintendo.. I want to pay you money!! Why don't you like our money? Bring these items to the US. If Wii is going to have SD card space then the DS should too.. And it would be nice to not have to pull out my laptop every time i wanted to check my email. (second picture is the opera browser for the DS)

Great thing about California is..

There are so many things that have me love california. First you have the beach, mountains, grasslands, desert, rainforests all in one state. California Pizza Kitchen.. Well maybe thats not a great reason... but there are new reasons I find all the time. The latest is that Strangers With Candy opens July 7th in 18 theaters nation wide. And 8 are in california. Have a look!

You don't know you miss it 'till its gone

Well shortly after a trip to Disneyland, (the next morning) I turned on my laptop to find it busted. What could I do but blame Those Stupid A$$es TSA. Well its been almost two weeks, and losing my iPod at the same time i've been in true Apple withdraw.. Now I'm back on a Windows PC. Although I'm a fan of windows from a tech point of view, working on it has been a painfull experience. I forgot what it's like to have a PC that will throw up errors, or freeze for a moment, etc.. I had to really work my Powerbook to get any kind of resistance. It's funny, I was telling my new friend Rocky in Long Beach about how I got an Apple because i don't want to come home to a buggy computer after working on computers all day, and it does this. Well enough gushing about my laptop. I haven't posted for a while and though i should get a couple thoughts out before they leak out my ears.

Over again

Well it's the end of the school year once again and my thoughts of finally being free from stress are shown to be an illusion once again as well. I really need to get my priorities in order sometime soon. Anyway on a more interesting note, So far this month I have had 963 junk e-mails to my 308 non-junk emails. Thats not as bad as I thought. Although that doesn't count the 100 or so of the 308 that are emails from businesses I use such as HP, Southwest, etc. Also goodby to Charmed, Malcom in the Middle, and that 70's show. Most of the series finally focus has been on Will & Grace which I have lost interest in over the years. Well thats it for now.. I will try to post more thoughts this summer as I have neglected this journal for a great while.

Watch 70 legal TV stations for free

"Here is a collection of 70 free legal channels that you can watch from your browser. Includes Game Network, Tv Cartoons, Horror Channel, Comedy Channel, Sci-Fi Channel, Lifestyle Network, 8 Adult channels and a lot more." How is this legal? Now there would be no reason to pay for cable.. except for my DVR, but we all know TV hates DVRs so why offer something that would only leave DVR owners using cable? Although some network channels have shows on their websites now with un-skippable commercials now.

Host 6 Domains on 1 Account
jeff's favorite host. $166 for 2 years, includes 1 domain, add 5 more for just the registration cost. (for registration I use godaddy)
the cool thing is because you have 6 domains possible you can sell those for nearly the same amount. But for me so far I have 2 accounts and haven't done anything but 7 domains that I do for free.. Practice maybe?
one site is hour-of-darkness.com and another is my sister's: Littlestroyalty.com

Pan African Studies: notes

Since no-one reads this i thought i might just use it to take notes today. 1652 -> Jan Van Ri 1800 -> British went to india before it devided brought indians to SA to work in Sugar Cane Plantations as enslaved people. Boers: Dutch / Afrikaaners... Boer War.. Created language: Afrikaan and raised it to national language.  Boer War - Fighted for "Their land".  1948 -> Gave discrimination "Apartheid" a name. Word comes from word apart but means more than a people seperated.  / Apartheid    +- Whites 4+ Million     |   ( Men from the british empire and Boers     |    and desendents )    +- Indians 2+ Million     |   ( Honorary Whites)     |    +- Coloreds 2+ Million     |   (desendents of the whites and     |   the Indiginous Women )    +- Indiginous 45+ Million / Apartheid / Education   +- Whites $1000 per child    |   (Full Curiculum)   +- Indians $200 per child    |  ( Math & Science )    +- Coloreds $100 per child    |   +- Indiginous $25 - $15 per child 87% Land owned by Euro Affricans *8% of the people. You had a pass to go into different areas higher up the apartheid ladder. or even be in your own area.  You could only go into white area if you get a stamp that lasted 72 hours.  You could get it for service to whites. Compounds called Hostels.  Worse than many prisons here.  To work in the cities non-whites had to live in hostels cut off from family.Euro Affricans could have indiginous servants live in"guest" homes. Work would be around $10 a month. husb & Wife must work, 72hr rule made it so you had to live on the out-side of town you had work so husb & wife couldnt live together

2006, the year for mergers complete

Well there is another big merger.  And I find I have little problem with them.  They end up with better products and (sometimes) cheeper prices. At the turning of the callendar two biggies were SBC and Adobe.  Both eating up companies nearly as big as them.  While Adobe kept its name over macromedia, SBC can't be blamed for using the more globaly known AT&T (now at&t).  But this week when going over roxio's website another change at the new year was Sonic Solutions born of Roxio and Sonic.  Both are good solid programs with their own sets of problems.  With a fresh new company me hopes they can turn out a mega DVD solution for the PC that will match the ease of creating DVDs on the PC. BTW, I just got a new widget for my powerbook that lets me post anything from my dashboard. (for those who don't speak mac, it means its now easier to post, maybe I will write more often.)

jack in the box

I often go to Jack-in-the-box because they take my visa and i rarely carry around cash. Well one of my favorite things is a sourdough jack combo meal with cheese potatoes (instead of fry's) and rootbeer. In moments of pure abandon i will even get a shake instead of a rootbeer. Well i hadn't mentioned this until now because i havent pulled my pics off of my phone forever. In early jan. I went to a drive thru in folsom after a long day of work and they charged me for the full meal plus the wedges and milkshake, they wern't paying well attention, i don't know what the deal was but here is a snapshot of the store. Not in good condition. even the counter was a mess.

Random thoughts

Movies i need to buy / rent mirrormask 2/7/2005 (rent DVD) Narnia 2006 (buy DVD) Corpse Bride Double Disk Widescreen Special Edition (when it exists) PRIME NUMBERS: Who knew they were so interesting. In fact the discovery Prime numbers is a great achievement. The largest of the largest was found on February 18, 2005 by Dr. Martin Nowak from Germany. It was the 42nd Known Mersenne Prime found. Finding a Mersenne prime uses the functions M(p) = 2p-1 and P(p) = 2p-1(2p-1). To understand what makes a Mersenne prime confuses me. You have to know about perfect numbers among other things (A number is a perfect number if you can add up its divisors and equal itself. for example you can divide 6 by one, two, or three and 1+2+3=6!). I find "Twin" primes much more easy to understand.. They are prime numbers that are only two apart. For example 11 and 13 would be twin prim numbers. 3 and 5 are not prime twins as they are prime prime triplets along with 7. (I don't believe 2 is part of the "twin" set as it is only one away from 3.

Big accident

Last Saturday night what a odd night. I stayed home while mom and everyone went to Reno for my cousins wedding. I had a group project for school and went to CSUS after which I saw that my keys were locked in the van. So after AAA broke into the van for me I decided to stop at Safeway for some Aquafina or something. Since the last time I went to safeway it had stopped being open 24hrs. As I walked back to the van I noticed a few Ambulances and Cops, Thinking nothing of it I headed back home. I saw a few more. When I got to landis there was a flipped van and a smashed Honda. It was obvious that no-one walked away from the cars. Being so close to home and with the whole family out of the house on the roads it made me ponder on the scary possibilities. (photos to come once I find my phone.)

tech pressure

Well schools started and I am stressed enough, and now is when my boss wan'ts me to launch a computer Service Promotion. I can understand how he is needing to have security in the business for his family and all, but I don't know who he think will go on service calls repairing computers. To be successfull we will need to do all the calls that come in and a few a day would be all i could handle... Anyway I am researching it and finding good articals on the web. Here is a good guide to see if you should be a tech. Criteria for being a tech You need to be able to agree with a lot of these questions: — I almost always solve my own computer problems on my own, or as the result of my own research. — I talk with colleagues all the time so we can share ideas, about tech and non-tech matters alike. — My friends, coworkers and family often turn to me for help with their computers and peripherals. — My own computer probably would work very well if I didn't keep installing alpha, beta, development and trial software on it all the time. — I've totally hosed my own computer a number of times because I just wanted to see what would happen when I... — I have been known to spend hours on solving a problem, non-tech and tech alike, without growing bored. — My home is littered with electronic gadgets and computer-related devices. — I spend as much or more time on the Internet than I do watching television, and very little of that time is spent on chat. — I can usually quickly find what I'm looking for on the Internet. — I read constantly, and just about everything. — I rarely have a problem explaining myself. — I am somewhat sociable, but I can work for long periods on my own, too. — I'm friendly but not garrulous. — Although I hate the term "self-starter," that's what I am. — I believe all computer peripherals and devices are hot-swappable unless someone else is around. — I have never impersonated someone of the opposite sex in an AOL forum. — I only keep my AOL account so I can more easily get my email from any web browser anywhere. — I get a lot of spam, but I block or filter most of it, so it's not an issue for me anymore. — I never read the manuals when setting up new electronic toys, but only later, when I'm sitting around bored with the toy, just to amuse myself. — Unix is like a lover to me: I don't understand it very well, and it makes me angry sometimes, but I am still in love with it. — I have some computer books on the shelf, but I only use them as references, not as literature. — I see nothing wrong with strapping a wireless PDA with GPS to the dog so that we can log his roaming patterns through the neighborhood. http://www.koozie.org/2004/10/freelance_tech_.html Starting / promoting your business as a tech http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/27151

GoDaddy Attacks Torrent Sites

GoDaddy (domain registrar) started to ban Bittorrent sites. The first site they banned is Mybitorrent. The next step could be mininova, isohunt or torrentspy. These three belong to the biggest (torrent) site on the web and are all registered with GoDaddy. I just switched from godaddy for hosting to These Guys (BlueHost) I found out about them from my WOW guild (thedungeonmasters.com) and they rock. Its like 6 domains for less than ten bucks or something (i cant remember cause i paid for 2 years at once). They have too like 250GB transfer and 10GB space.. more than i could use.. and 2500 POP EMAIL, the best web host company i know of. I used to be a godaddy only guy (back when they weren't big and network solutions lost the monopoly). I still use them for registration, but i stoped hosting a few months ago. (although the new free hosting with purchase stuff on Diggnation they were talking about has got me interested again.. ) Oh, and the other deal i found recently is this 20 free prints which after shipping costs $2.06, not free but cheaper than sam's club or elsewhere (like 10 cents rather than 14) and you don't have to wait an hour. Just select them and in a few days they are at your door. If you like me you wouldn't be able to find the time to burn a disk and head out to sam's club to do it in that amount of time and this is no effort.

Sony PS3 and Nintendo Revolution to Ship in 2007?

I think this is a very possible situation. Believe it or not, those of us who look for release date rumors are a minority. The majority will likely remain unaware of such maters until advertisements & promotions begin. And they can count on us to not give up on a system no matter how long before release. Waiting well over a year (maybe 2) can give Sony & Nintendo a great advantage over following the xBox by just 6 months. The first year of the Xbox360 will have a lot of current gen games. Imagine for the next 12 months, a visible percentage of games released on the Xbox360 and also on Playstation 2. While gamecube releases high profile games like "The Twilight Princess" and a few multi-platform games. By the time 2007 roles around, parents and kids are thinking of the Xbox360 as not a new generation gaming system but a current system. And a concurrent release of both Sony and Nintendo systems would propagate that view. (And they have both stated that they don't believe they are competing for the same audience, so they wouldn't mind a concurrent release.)

The holiday's end

Now is the end of the holiday's. We had a great time with Gingerbread houses, christmas Caroling, Christmas Eve and Newyear's eve. And christmas lights are getting big here. It started (and continues) with Dove Court, where it took about 20 minuets to drive past. It has every house decked out with lights and a theme. I enjoyed the beach christmas house.. Another street (about 10 times as long) has joined in the last few years. It isn't as themed but makes it up (for me at least) with mostly disney cutouts. This year, and right around the corner was a house set up with relays. Now this was a new idea this year seen on the internet (Download) then filmed & purchased by Miler Light for a commercial. The house around here had the same Manhattan Steamroller music and more songs this last week ending on Dec. 31st. They only had 48 relays rather than 86 like the ones on the net. However they had trees in the front yard which made for a better show. It took over 3 miles of extension cords, 3 days to set up and 8 hours to program the song.

The new year is looking up...

1. Didn't have work monday, 2. Downloaded Dr Who (New Episode) !!! 3. New Arrested Development (not the best episode, but its new) 4. Scrubs is back on TV. (Pushed back to now to focus on 'The Office') 5. Got to a point in 'Mario & Luigi, Partner's in time' requiring a check of Gamefaqs.com 6. Movies: New World (if it lives up to the hype) Nanny McPhee (likewise) Underworld 2 (maybe) Big Mamma's House 2 (Nooooo! kill me now!)
